Her maternal grandparents were Nelson Burgess Hester and Cornelia Malissa Hathaway. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Ed LeRoy, Arthur Elmer, William Ellsworth, Lee Henry, Edith Louise, Irene Belle and Ruth Mabel. She was the oldest of the eight children.
