His paternal grandparents were Hugh De Venables and Elizabeth Mobberly; his maternal grandparents were Sir Richard De Hoghton and Sibyl De Lea. He had a brother and a sister, named Richard and Joan. He was the second oldest of the three children. He died in 1379.¹
