Graduate of the Medical Department, University of Cologne, Germany who probably lived in Amsterdam before settling on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Owned extensive land in Cecil Co. MD and Northampton Co. VA where he died in 1650-1.

Medical degree from the University of Cologne...ran a most successful tobacco house - Hack and Hermann - in New Amsterdam until the Navigation Act of 1651 did it in. They then set up business in MD and VA...In 1666 the MD assembly "granted the petition of Augustine Herman of the realme of Prague in the Kingdom of Bohemia, Anna Hacke, born at Amsterdam in Holland, George and Peter Hack, her sons, born at Accomac in VA..."Archives of MD, v.I, p.462...granted 10 April 1666. Nugent: (p.46) Patented 1000 acres Northampton County 23 Sep 1661; 200 acres being two small islands nr North point of the cr.. Transported 20 persons including a signed to Francis Sherwood....Whitelaw says he patented 1000 acres at Pungoteague Creek and in 1653 obtained a deed for the Indian rightsfrom Tepitiason, King of the Great Nuswattocks... MD Hist Mag, v.42,p. 102 "German Settlers in Early Colonial MD" says George Hack was born in Cologne in 1623, studied medicine at U of Cologne, came to America when he had received his degree and settled in New Amsterdam...went to Northampton County, where he practiced medicine.  May have moved to Baltimore County, MD in the early 60s. Died about 1665, leaving two sons: George Nicholas of VA and Peter of MD. Dr. Hack received a certificate for land for transporting Ann Hacke, his wife, and Katherine Varlett in 1653.  In 1659 another certificate listed Geroge Nicholas Hack, Sepherin Hack and Katherine Hack. (Sepherin is believed to have been a brother of Dr.Hack who was killed by Indians while in MD).  Inventory of his estatelisted 54 books in Latin, 20 in English and 22 High German and Dutchbooks...
