Joan was born about 1234 in Of, Kingsdown, Kent, England.1 Joan's father was Ralph FitzBarnard and her mother was Joan Aquillon. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas FitzBarnard and Alice De Jarpenville; her maternal grandparents were Robert De Aquillon and Agathe De Beaufoe. She was an only child.
