French admiral and Huguenot leader, born in Chatillon-sur-Loing (now Chatillon-Coligny). He distinguished himself in the wars of Francis I and Henry II, kings of France, against Charles V, Holy Roman emperor. In 1552 Coligny became admiral of France, and five years later he was defeated and captured by the Spanish at Saint-Quentin. During his 2 year imprisonment he embraced the views of the Franch Protestants, or Huguenots. In 1560 Catherine de Medicis, Mother of Charles IX, king of France, conspired with Coligny and other Huguenot leaders against the powerful Catholic ducal Guise family. The plot failed, but Coligny succeeded in gaining some measure of religious freedom by the Treaty of Amboise in 1563. He played a major part in the Catholic-Huguent wars of the 1560's. Beginning in 1569 Coligny was the principal leader on the Huguenot side, and he obtained favorable terms in the Treaty of Saint Germain (1570), which ended the third religious war. Coligny had alarmed Catherine by his influence over the young King Charles and over Henry of Navarre, Later King Henry IV. The queen mother thereupon plotted with the Guises and compelled her son to agree to the massacre of Huguenots on August 24, 1572. (This was known as the the St. Bartholomew Massacre.)
Coligny was among the thousands slain.
