William de Aldithley, Lord of the Manor of Talck, in County Stafford, married Joan, daughter and sole heir of Thomas de Stanley or Stoneley, and with her received the manor of Talck, which he exchanged with his cousin Adam de Audleigh (ancestor of the D'Audleys), who had married Mabelle, daughter of Henry de Stonleigh, for Stonleigh and half of Balterly, and thereby assumed the name of Stonleigh or Stanley, and became the immediate founder of the Stanleys, a race associated with the most stirring events in English history.
