Practically all of Louisiana's TRAHANs descend from Acadian refugees who entered the colony from 1765 through 1785. In Acadia the clan was started by Guillaume Trahan . He was born in 1611 in Bourguel, France, the son of Nicolas Trahan and Renee Desloges. He listed his occupation as a toolsmith. He was married in 1628 to Francoise Charbonneau. Arriving in Acadia with his wife in 1636, Guillaume produced a large family. He remarried in 1666 to Madeleine Brun. For four generations, his descendants established farms near Pisiguit and Grand Pre', Acadia.
After the Expulsion of 1755, the Trahan families, like many others, were deported to various of the British North American colonies, as well as to England and France, and some escaped into Canada. According to available records, the first Trahans to enter Louisiana probably arrived in 1765 with a group of Acadian exiles from Halifax. Once arriving, they went directly to the Attakapas District were they established the Trahan name.
