Deitrich and Annie Bischel Brandt were born in Germany and came to America in 1853 to Lake Co., Indiana where he died in 1873. Their 3 eldest children - John, Margaret Mussman and Mary Locker, were born in. Germany. William, Henry, Anna Sauter, Gesina Bahr, Emma, Gross and Herman were born in Indiana.
John D. Brandt was born in Hanover, Germany in 1845, lived with his parents in Indiana until 1869, when he came to Benton Co., Iowa, bought some land in Big Grove Township, cleared and broke some of it, then returned to Indiana to marry Margaret Meyer. She was the daughter of D. H. Meyer. Her mother had died in Germany and later her father came to Iowa and made his home with Margaret and John. Mr. Brandt had added to the original 160 acres over the years until he had accumulated over 1300 acres, which he farmed with the help of his son John. For about 14 years they owned and operated a threshing machine in the neighborhood.
John and Margaret were the parents of William D. Anna S. John H, Marie G., Elizabeth E. and Ellen who died as a child.
John H. Brandt farmed with his father and married Minnie Gross, a daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth Schadle Gross, in 1902. They moved into Garrison in 1911 where he died soon afterwards. They were the parents of Floyd, who married Ella Brendell and had sons Ned and Joe; Inez who married Theron Wenner, son of the Oscar Wenners - local hardware merchant. Their children were Nerys and Harry 0., Kenneth who married Grace Froning- daughter of the A. J. Fronings operator of the Grain elevator and Lumber Co., and had children - Jack, Steven and Kay; Harold and Bernice Pippert Brandt had one son John, moved to Florida where Harold died,
After her family grew up and married, Minnie married local truck operator. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge. She died in Garrison in 1955.
William married Christine Albright, farmed in Homer Township and had 2 children - Lucille and Walter. Anna S. married a Big Grove Township farmer, John F. Reiss and lived all their married life in that neighborhood. Their children are Harry, Ernest, Leola and Ivan.
Marie Brandt married a Dysart farmer - William Heineman. They were the parents of the following children - Irene, Fern, Richard who died in 1940. Netha Thorn and Walter who is a prominent Garrison farmer. Walter bought this Jackson Township farm, north west of town and they have continued to make their home there after their retirement. He married Anabelle Wiest in 1910 and they are the parents of Mary, Marcia and John who is also a farmer and lives at the west edge of Garrison. He married Charmaine Selk and they have 2 children. They are members of the Lutheran Church, the Garrison Fire Dept and its Auxiliary. Walter served in the Navy as a See Bee in WW 2 and is a member of the American Legion. Anabelle is an Auxiliary member and member of the Rebekah Lodge. They are active members of the Garrison United Methodist Church.
Elizabeth married a Vinton farmer, William Knuth. They retired to Vinton and have a daughter Margaret.
The Gross family - John and Thora Wenner Gross and children -Annie, Marguerite, Nicholas and Casper came to America from Germany in 1864 and located in Big Grove Twp. Benton Co., Iowa.
Nicholas married Elizabeth Schadle, daughter of Louis and Elizabeth Weley Schadle in 1876 and in 1879 he bought his first farm in Big Grove Twp. In 1913 they sold the farm and retired to Garrison. He was a stock holder in the Garrison Savings Bank and Garrison Grain and Lumber Co. He was a member of the Methodist Church, I.O.O.F. and Woodman Lodges.
Their children were - Henry C. who married Annie Heineman and farmed south of Garrison. Annie married John C. Messer, a Dysart farmer. Minnie married John Brandt and with their family retired to Garrison
John and Frieda Zimmer Gross farmed S. W, of Garrison when their children - Evelyn, Merlin and Marion were born. They retired to Illinois. Evelyn married Harold Pennell, a cream tester and later manager of the Garrison Creamery and they made their home in town where they raised their children - Carlene Carlson, Nancy Long, Robert and Bonnie Carter - none of whom remained in Garrison. Evelyn maintains her home here and is the only member of the Gross family in the area.
Emma Gross married a Dysart farmer, Ed Wurtzel, both are deceased.
Josephine Hesrodt, Arthur and Earl are all deceased.
Clara Gross Johnson is the only living member of this family of Nicholas. Casper Gross married Emma Brandt.
Deitrick and Annie Brandt's eighth child was Emma, She was born in Indiana in 1864 and married to Casper Gross, son of John and Thora Wenner Gross. Casper was manager of the Garrison Brick Yard before retiring to Garrison. Emma cared for her bachelor brother in her home until his death. She was a lovely lady, always doing a good deed for some one. She was an active member of the Methodist Church and its 'Ladies Aid'. She will be long remembered for the lovely quilts she made. She and 'Cap' were parents of three daughters - Mabelle, a teacher, who was a professor of Teaching at I.S.T.C. at Cedar Falls, before her death in l942; Lillian married Charles Wise and moved to Cedar Rapids after his death. She now makes her home with a daughter there. Gesina was born at Garrison in 1886 and died in 1968. She was a telephone operator for 35 years, before retiring in 1957. She made her home with her mother, then, after Emma's death, continued to make it her home until her death. She was a life member of the Methodist W.S.C.S., Secretary of the Garrison Cemetery Association for 40 years, a fifty year member of the R.N.A. Lodge and a Charter member of the Rebekah Lodge of which she was Secretary for many years, until her health failed. Garrison was her home and her life. She will long be remembered and greatly missed by all.
