Godfrey de was born in 1186 in , 's-Hertogenbosch, Noord Brabant, Netherlands.1   Godfrey de's father was Henri I de Brabant-Lorraine and his mother was Maud Vaudemont. He had a brother and six sisters, named Henri II de, Marie de, Marguerite de, Alix De, Mathilde de, Mabilia van and Elisabeth zu.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
