Note: Little is known about Thomas Barnes' parentage, birth and arrival in this country. He is often called "Thomas of New Haven" to distinguish him from other Thomas Barnes' of the era.
He settled at New Haven before 1639 as a minor; he appears in the public record in New Haven about 1644 as a young man, part of a land distribution there. He married in 1647 at New Haven and resided there until 1660 or 1665. He moved then to North Haven, later to Middletown (Middlefield area). He served in the Pequot War in 1637 and signed the original colonial constitution.

John; Thomas, b. 26 Aug. 1653; Daniel, 29 Aug. 1659, bapt. 1661, on the same day with Abigail, his sis. b. 16 Mar. 1657, but the day on the rec. of ch. is a false one, 27 June, which was a Thursday; and Maybee, b. 25 June 1663, as the careful town rec. tells, bapt. not, as the careless ch. rec. tells, 20 July of that yr. wh. was on Monday; beside three other ds. of wh. Eliz. perhaps eldest, was b. 28 May 1650. His w. Mary d. 1676.
