Eleanor was born in 1246.  Eleanor's father was John De BALLIOL  and her mother was Dervorgilla De GALLOWAY.  Her paternal grandparents were Hugh De BALLIOL  and Cecily De La FONTAINE; her maternal grandparents were Alan MacDonald De GALLOWAY and Margaret De Huntington. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Alexander, John, William Le Scott, Cecilia, Ada, Euphemia and Eupheme.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.

‌Eleanor and John The Black were married in a religious ceremony in 1269 in Bernard Castle,Gainford,Durham,England.  They had a son named John Red.
