Her paternal grandparents were Frederick Witty and Mary; her maternal grandparents were Fred Hardt and Amanda or Amelia. She had two brothers and three sisters, named August, Frank, Emme (Emma), Anna Christine and Ida (Eda). She was the oldest of the six children.
