James was born in December 1394 in Dunfermline Palace, Fife, Scotland. James' father was Robert Stuart and his mother was Annabella Drummond. His paternal grandparents were Robert Stuart and Elizabeth of Rowallan MURE; his maternal grandparents were John Drummond and Mary Montefex. He had a brother named David Stewart of. James was taken prisoner by the English on his voyage from Scotland to France in 1405, and
was sent to the Tower of London, where he remained in captivity until 1424. In that year he
returned to Scotland. He acceded to the throne on May 02, 1424 at Scone Abbey, Perthshire.
He went with his wife Queen Joan Beaufort to the Monastry of the Friars Preachers in Perth to
celebrate Christmas. Here, his uncle Walter, Earl of Atholl, along with other assasins murdered him.
He tried to escape from a lower chamber but it had been sealed. Queen Joan Beaufort was
injured while trying to assist her husband. She later had the assasins tortured until her grief
was satisfied, and their lives were then terminated.
