Madach, s(d) of Melmare (br of Malcolm III, King of Scotland, 1057-98)was witness to the charter of Scone dated 1115 as "Madach Comes," i.e.Madach Earl of Atholl or Athole [Scotland]. He married about 1133,probably as a 2nd wife, Margaret, daughter of Haco, Jarl of Orkney, whichisland was then part of the Kingdom of Norway, and died between 1142 and1152. His widow married Erland Ugni, Jarl of Orkney, who was killed 1156.[Complete Peerage I:304]

The first Earl of Atholl who appears in actual Scottish record is EarlMadach, or Madeth, who is named as a witness to the foundation charter ofthe Abbey of Scone, granted by King Alexander I, which is usually said tobe gratned in the year 1113-14, but was probably after 1116. Earl Madachis described by the Norwegian writer Torfæus as a magnificent prince, andthe cousin ('patruelis') of King David I. He bore the same relation toKing Alexander I, as he was the son of their uncle, Melmare (called bythe Norwegian writers 'Melkofr'), who was the younger brother of MalcolmIII, 'Ceannmor,' their father. Earl Madach also appears as a witness to acharter by King David I to the churhc of Dunfermline, dated between 1124and 1127, and to two charters to the monks of Coldingham, which must bedated about or after 1140, while the latest record of him, so far as hasbeen ascertained, is in a charter by the same King to the monksofMelrose, dated 1142 or 1143. Earl Madach died some time before 1152, whenhis wife Margaret returned to Orkney. He appears to have been marriedtwice. If so, the name and parentage of the first wife are unknown. About1133 he married Margaret, daughter of Hakon, Earl of Orkney, who survivedhim and married, secondly, Erlend Ungi, who was also made Earl of Orkney,and was killed in 1156.
