"At his death, William I divided his domains; Normandywent to his eldest son, England to the next.  When William II was killed in the New Forest, the youngest brother seize d the throne by a coup-de-main and became Henry I.  His acceptance was reinforc ed by the fact that his wife was descended from the old Saxon dynasty.  However , at the end of his reign he had only one legitimate child, his daughter Matild a, now married to Geoffrey, count of Anjou.  Henry sought in vain to make her h is successor, but on his death the throne was boldly seized by his nephew, Step hen of Blois, who already possessed large English estates.  Matilda pressed her claims, and there ensued a period of spasmodic civil war, often mis-styled as anarchy; ultimately a compromise was achieved by which Matilda's son succeeded as Henry II in 1154.[New Cunard.ged]
