Silas W. was born in 1849 in Orange County,Indiana. Silas W.'s father was Benjamin Neal Sloan and his mother was Mary Ann Sands Douthit. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Sloan and Leannah Bolling; his maternal grandparents were Benjamin Douthit and Maria Riley. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Winfield Scott, Archibald Franklin, Elmer Elsworth, Edward, Oliver Howard, Haden Finley, Clarissa Ellen, Rebecca Ann, Lidda Martha, Leannah Caroline and Mary Belle. He was the oldest of the twelve children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named William Harrison, John Eads and Janette (Jennett).-
