Robert I , King of France was born in 0866 in Bourgogne,Marne,France. Robert I , King of France's father was Robert IV Robertien and his mother was Adelaede D'Alsace. His paternal grandparents were Rutpert 'Robert" of Wormsgau and Wiltrude of Orleans; his maternal grandparents were Louis I Carolingien King and Ermengarde Hesbaye. He had a sister named Hedwig "Edith". He was the younger of the two children. He died in Soissons,France.General Notes
Robert did not claim the crown on his brother's death in 898,but recognized the Carolingian king Charles III; Robertcontinued to defend northern France from Norman attacks as dukeof the Franks. About 921, he gathered support for his claim,and drove Charles into Lorraine.
June 29, 922, he was crowned at Rheims and the next year facedCharles' attempt to oust him, during which " in a stubborn andsanguinary battle near Soissons, Robert was killed, according toone tradition, in single combat with his rival." -EncyclopediaBritannica, 1956 Ed., 19:346.
Robert I, younger son of Robert the Strong of Neustria, andbriefly king of France (922-923), or West Francia. His decisivevictory over the Northmen at Chartres, France (911) led to atreaty settling one group of these fierce warriors in Normandy.
Robert faithfully served his older brother, King Eudes, duringEudes's reign (888-898). Though on Eudes's death he became oneof the most powerful Frankish lords, inheriting all the familylands between the Seine and the Loire rivers, he swore fealtywith other magnates to the new king, the Carolingian Charles IIIthe Simple. Nevertheless, he was already served in his domainsby viscounts, officials usually regarded as instruments of regalpower.
From 911 onward, his role became more decisive: his defeat ofthe Northmen at Chartres, France paved the way for the Treaty ofSaint-Clair-sur-Epte, by which Charles assigned them territoryin Normandy.
Robert's military success greatly enhanced his prestige, anddissension between him and the King became undisguised. WhenCharles III imprudently offered preferment exclusively to lordsfrom Lorraine, the Neustrian lords, led by Robert, broke intoopen revolt. They elected Robert king at Reims in June 922. Ina battle near Soissons a year later, Charles's army was routed,but Robert was killed.
His grandson was Hugh Capet, founder of the Capetian dynasty.
