Maartje was born on October 4th, 1818 in Oudshoorn,Zuid Holland,Netherland.  Maartje's father was Hendrik ROEST and her mother was Cornelia VAN DER MIK.  Her paternal grandparents were Hendrik ROEST and Duijfje Van T'WOUDT. She had a brother and two sisters, named Hendrik, Jannigje and Maarijtje.  She was the second youngest of the four children.
