Her paternal grandparents were *David Oliver Oates and *Sally Jane Sarah Herrin; her maternal grandparents were *Henry David Pipkin and *Carrie Elizabeth Prewit. She had three brothers named Sidney Wayne, Thomas Henry and James Oliver. She was the second youngest of the four children.-
