Edward William's father was Robert Charles Herbert and his mother was Anna Maria Cludde. His paternal grandparents were Edward |Clive| Herbert Earl of Po and Lucy Graham Lady. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Graham Cludde, Arthur Frederick, Florentia Caroline, Beatrice Mary and Annie Katharine Louisa. He was the oldest of the six children.
