His paternal grandparents were Robert De FERRERS (FERRIER [Earl of Derby] [Earl of D and Margaret Peverel [COUNTESS OF DER [COUNTESS; his maternal grandparents were William De BRAOSE [Sheriff of Here [Sheriff o and Bertha De GLOUCESTER. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Son De, Son De, Son De, Robert, Elizabeth De, Agatha De and Millicent De. He was the oldest of the eight children.
