Count of Flanders 988-1035. He greatly expanded Flemish dominions. He fought against the Capetian King of France, Robert II and the Holy Roman Emporer Henry II. Henry granted him the fief Valenciennes, the margraveship of Ghent, the land of Waes and Zeeland. Baldwin's son, Baldwin V, rebelled against his father in 1028, but two years later a peace was sworn at Oudenaarde. The old count continued to reign until his death in 1036.
