Matilda was born in 1163 in Kevelioc, Monmouth, Wales. Matilda's father was Earl Hugh Kevelioc deMeschines Earl of Chester and her mother was Bertha de Montfort. Her paternal grandparents were Earl Ranulf deGernon and Matilda (Maud) fitz Robert; her maternal grandparents were Simon deEvreux the Bold Count de Evreux and Maud deMontfort. She had six sisters named Amicia le Meschines, Mabel, Agnes of Chester, Agnes of Chester, Alice Agnes and Hawise le. She was the second oldest of the seven children.General Notes
