Charles was born in 0676 in Heristal, Liege, Belgium. Charles' father was Mayor Pepin II deAustrasia and his mother was Alpaida. His paternal grandparents were Anisgise Mayor of Austrasia and Beggue of Brabant. He was an only child. He died at the age of 65 on October 22nd, 0741 in Quiery, Aisne, France.General Notes
Charles was the illegitamite son of Pepin II of Heristal, and mayor ofthe palace of the easternportion of the Merovingian realm (Austria). Hisfather died in 714 and by 718 he suceeded in gaining his fathers wealthand office. In 737 the Merovingian king Theuderic died and from thenuntil his death he ruled alone as chief (princeps) of the Franks, withouta king. He was elevated to status of king in the 1260's.
