Thomas was born in Heton, Northumberland, England..  Thomas' father was Sir. Thomas de Grey and his mother was Jane Anne de Mowbray.  His paternal grandfather was Gray de Barwick; his maternal grandfather was Lord John de Mowbray.  He was an only child.
