Malcolm III King of was born in 1033 in Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. Malcolm III King of's father was Duncan I King of Scotland and his mother was Sibyl Fitzsiward. His paternal grandparents were Crinan Atholl Thane Atholl and Bethoc Princess of Scotland; his maternal grandparents were Siward Earl of Northumbria and Alefbed of Bernica. He had three brothers named Donald Ban III King of, Melmare Earl of and Duncan Earl of. He was the oldest of the four children. He had four half-brothers named Malcolm III, Malcolm III King of, Donald Ban III King of and Duncan Earl of. Malcolm III "Ceanmor (Longneck)" King of Scotland, founder of the dynastythat consolidated royal power in the Scottish kingdom. The son of KingDuncan I, Malcolm lived in exile in England during part of the reign ofhis father's murderer, Macbeth. Malcolm killed Macbeth in battle in 1057and then ascended the throne. After the conquest of England by Williamthe Conqueror, in 1066, Malcolm gave refuge to the Anglo-Saxon princeEdgar the Aetheling and his sisters, one of whom, Margaret (later St.Margaret), became his second wife. Malcolm acknowledged the overlordshipof William in 1072 but nevertheless soon violated his feudal obligationsand made five raids into England. During the last of these invasions hewas killed by the forces of King William II Rufus (reigned 1087-1100),near Alnwick, Northumberland, England. Except for a brief interval afterMalcolm's death, the Scottish throne remained in his family until thedeath of Queen Margaret, the Maid of Norway, in 1290. Of Malcolm's sixsons by Margaret, three succeeded to the throne: Edgar (reigned1097-1107), Alexander I (1107-24), and David I (1124-53).
