His paternal grandparents were Baron Gwerystan ap Gwaethfoed and Nesta verch Cadell; his maternal grandfather was King Maredudd ap Owain of deheubarth. He had two brothers and a sister, named Bleddyn ap Cynfin of Powys, Caradoc ap Cynfyn and Everydd ap Cynfyn of Powys. He was the youngest of the four children.
