His paternal grandparents were Richard Newbury and Grace Matthew; his maternal grandparents were John Dabinott and Johanna Collins. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, John, Thomas, Sarah, Mary, Rebecca, Hannah, Daughter, Unknown and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the eleven children.
