Thomas III was born in 1683 in Rye, Westchester Co., New York. Thomas III's father was Thomas II Merritt and his mother was Jane Sherwood. His paternal grandparents were Thomas I Merritt and Susanna Cranniwell; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Sherwood and Alice Seabrook. He had nine brothers and four sisters, named John, Ephhraim, Joseph, Isaac, Samuel, Steven, Edward, Thomas, Mathew, Alice, Jane, Rose and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the fourteen children.-
