John was born in of North Hall, Leeds, England.  John's father was Thomas Folkingham of North Hall, Esq. and his mother was Jane Pigot.  His maternal grandfather was Thomas Pigot Esq.. He had a sister named Anne. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Francis, John, Thomas, Alice and Elizabeth.
