His paternal grandparents were Gwerystan Ap Gwaithfoed and Nest Verch Cadell; his maternal grandfather was Meredydd Ap Owen Ap Howel Ddu. He had two brothers and a sister, named Caradoc Ap, Rhiwallon ap and Iwerydd verch. He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother named Gruffydd Ap.
