Gilbert de was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christ Church, Hampshire, England.  Gilbert de's father was Earl Sir Richard of Gloucester Clare and his mother was Maud Lacy.  His paternal grandparents were Earl Gilbert of Hertford Clare and Isabel Marshal; his maternal grandparents were Earl John of Lincoln Lacy and Margaret Quincy. He had a brother named Thomas.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Monmouthshire, Wales.  He was buried on December 22nd, 1295 in Tewksbury Abbey, Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, England.
