His paternal grandparents were Robert Guyn and Jane Black; his maternal grandparents were John Black and Martha McGill. He had six brothers and a sister, named John Campbell, Samuel James, William Rainey, Charles Christopher, Thomas Rankin, Angus Gordon and Martha Jane. He was the oldest of the eight children.
