Burchard was born in 1182 in Of,Oizy,Namur,Belgium.1 Burchard's father was Jacques de Avesnes and his mother was Adelphie de Guise. His paternal grandparents were Nicolas "Plukiel" Seigneur De Avesnes and Mathilde de la Roche; his maternal grandfather was Bernard de Guise. He was an only child.
