His paternal grandparents were Gwerystan ap Gwaethfoed and Nest Verch Cadell; his maternal grandparents were Maredudd ap Owain and Nest Verch Owain. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Gruffydd ap, Caradog, Bleddyn ap, Gwerydd verch, Nest verch and Iwerydd Verch. He was the youngest of the seven children.
