Jose was born on March 14th, 1658 in Oñate,España. Jose's father was Juan de Zañartu Aguirre and his mother was Maria Orueta Resusta. His paternal grandparents were Juan de Zañartu y Balzategui and Maria de Aguirre y Balzategui; his maternal grandparents were Lorenzo de Orueta and Celedonia de Resusta. He was an only child.
