Hugh I de , of Avon Tyrell, Sir was born about 1105 in Langham Manor,Laingaham,Essex,England. Hugh I de , of Avon Tyrell, Sir's father was Walter III , of Poix & Langham, Sir Tyrell and his mother was Adelaide Giffard. His paternal grandparents were Walter II , of Poix & Langham, Sir Tyrell and Ann De Clare; his maternal grandfather was Richard Giffard. He was an only child. The pedigree I am following is found in a posting by John Stuart to soc.genealogy.medieval. It shows the "classic" descent of the Tyrell family of Heron Hall, Essex from Walter Tyrell, the alleged assassin of William II, which is found in a book "A Genealogical History of the Tyrrells" by Joseph Henry Tyrrell (JHT). There are many problems with the pedigree (in fact, according to John Stuart, JHT presents three variations in his book, but the one presented here is based on visitations.) John Stuart presents a critique with suggested alternatives based on a book "The Tyrells of England" by Dr. O. F. Brown (OFB). I am leaving my ancestry according to JHT, even though it has obvious problems, until the pedigree questions are resolved.

Generation 2 (JHT)
"Sir Hugh Tirel of Avon Tyrell, son of Walter III and Adelaide, Fourth Prince of Poix, A Baron of France and England, with the Crusade of 1146. Held lands in the New Forest. Sold Laingaham to Walter de Cornhill, prior to joining the Crusade. Died 1159.
Married Ada d'Aumale, daughter of Etienne de Champagne, Compte d'Aumale"
[OFB suggests that a probable corollary of the same Pipe Roll citation noted above regarding Adelice answering for Langham is that the Hugh who was son of Walter III and Adelice was also dead in 1131. Based on this and the chronology of other documents, OFB concludes that the Hugh Tirel who sold Langham and died on the Crusade was probably a Hugh II, son of Hugh I and brother of Walter IV.]
