Edward (the Martyr) King of England 
Edward, known as the Martyr, was born in 0962. The Martyr's father was King Edgar I ("the Peaceful") De Wessex and his mother was Elfrida De Mercia. His paternal grandfather was Edmund I (The Elder) De Wessex. He had a brother named the Unready. He was the older of the two children. He died at the age of 16 in 0978 in murdered at Corfe. He was buried in Wareham; translated to Shaftesbury.General Notes

1 NOTE Merged General Note: Edward the Martyr (circa 963-78),Anglo-Saxon king of England, son of King Edgar. A boy at thetime of his father's death, Edward ruled under the guidance ofSt. Dunstan, archbishop of Canterbury. His brief reign wasmarked by agitation against the monasteries, which Edgar hadfavored at the expense of the nonmonastic clergy. Edward wasassassinated, possibly at the instigation of his stepmotherElfrida (Aelfthryth), whose son Ethelred succeeded him. Miracleswere said to have occurred at his tomb, and he was laterdeclared a saint and martyr. Edward's feast day is March 18.
