Tervel of Bulgaria, son or grandson of Asparukh, succeeded him as ruler of the the First Kingdom of Bulgaria in 701. Tervel ruled until 718. He became an ally of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian (his father-in-law) who granted Tervel several territories and called him Caesar (King), noting the independest status of the Bulgarian state. New victories for Tervel in 716 brought about peace which lasted for the next 30 years. Tervel was succeeded in 724 by Sevar, a Khan of the Dolo family.
705 - In exchange for Tervel's help in assisting Justinian to regain his throne, Tervel was given Justinian's daughter in marriage and the rank of Caesar to reward him for his help.
