He was a merchant for many years before he became Tax Assessor of Scott Co. MS, he served in the office several terms. He was elected Chancery Clerk for several terms until his retirement. He was known all over the state for his singing, and he taught many singing schools and was a member of the Scott County Quartett for a long time. He was never defeated in politics and he played the piano well and was self taught.
