On 20 Nov 1923, Palestine filled out an Application for Pension of Widows
of Deceased Soldiers or Sailors of the Confederate States in the name of
her deceased husband Ellis Logan. On the application, questions are
asked with blanks to be filled in. In said blanks it is written: her
full name as Palestine Logan; address as 1843, 24 Ave., Tuscaloosa, Ala.;
exact age as 63 years, 9 months and 28 days. It is stated she has lived
in this State (Alabama) all her life. Several questions ask about the
service of the soldier or sailor. In summary, the several blanks disclose
that Ellis Logan enlisted in the service of the Confederacy on July 2,
1861, 13th Infantry, Company H. His rank was a captain and that his
actual service was for 11 months. He was never wounded nor taken
prisoner. He resigned because of health. It is listed that she married
Ellis on 20 Nov 1892. Question 21 asks when and where did your husband
die. Answer: 7 Sep 1898 in Fayette Co. In response to question that
asks if she has children and what they are doing the following is listed
in the blanks: Mrs Vera Wood, keeping house and Mrs. Erdele Walker,
keeping house. Palestine responds no to the following question: At the
time of your husband’s death, were you separated by divorce or were you
living voluntarily apart from him, during a period of one year prior to
his death?
