Ronald,
Saw your query on the Calhoun Co. page. I too am interested in John and
Mary McEwen. Mary was the dau. of James Rutherford. James was my
ggg-grandfather. In abt. 1852 James and at least 3 of his children moved
to Campbell Co. GA.(Now Douglas Co.). Soon after moving here James died
and John McEwen signed as a heir when the family deeded James' farm to
his sons William and James S. Also signing was Robert T. McEwen, husband
of Artemissa Rutherford who was also a dau. of James. Robert and
Artemissa married July 15, 1850, in Benton Co. I have found no evidence
that the 2 McEwen families moved here. Another dau.Elizabeth who m.
Johnston DeFreese in Benton Co. on Dec. 19, 1844, did move here. I don't
have much else on McEwen but would be glad to share whatever I have and
whatever I get in the future. I plan to go back over to the Anniston
library when I can to try to dig some more. In the 1850 Benton Co. census
John M. is shown to have been born in GA. When the Rutherfords moved here
there was McEwen family a few miles away that had been here some time.
This McEwen family was being research by a J. E. McEwen of Jacksonville,
AL. in recent times. One of questions I have had is why did James
Rutherford, at his age, who had probably been in GA in the 1820's (most
of his children were apparently born here), but who had a farm of more
than 160 acres in 1844 in Benton Co. give that up and come here? Was his
sons-in-law related to the Alexander McEwen that lived here?
