John was born on July 24th, 1804 in Kitley, Leeds, Ontario, Canada.1 John's father was Matthew Mills and his mother was Hannah (Boils) Boyles. His paternal grandparents were Matthew Mills and Miss UNKNOWN; his maternal grandparents were George Boyles and Sarah Mills. He was an only child.
