"Obra Bribery Logan: He operated a sawmill in Tumbling Shoals and opened
the first builders supply store in Heber Springs in the early 1950's on
the corner of 2nd & Searcy Streets.  He and Eunice built a new brick home
across the street at 111 Searcy Street next to a home originally built by
Bill and Mintie (Logan) Sutherlin at 105 W. Searcy Street.  That house
was later sold to Obra's son, Wilford and his wife, Peggy. His wife,
Eunice Lee (Prichard) Logan, was a graduate of the now defunct Quitman
College and taught in one-room schoolhouses prior to her marriage. She
later served as postmistress of Tumbling Shoals from 1947-1955.  (My dad
left home when I was six.  Since my grandfather Obra had died in 1959, I
had the blessing of being raised not only by my mother, but by my
grandmother, and it was from her that I gained my fanatic love of books.
She was an exceptionally strong woman who was a pillar of First United
Methodist Church in Heber Springs.) Obra and Eunice were lovers of old
time "shaped-note singing," and would travel all across Northern Arkansas
to conduct "singing schools."  She was an excellent pianist, and in later
life, took no greater pleasure than to listen to my mother or me play old
time songs on her massive upright piano. Because it sat on a polished
hardwood floor, it would reverberate unlike any piano I have ever played,
making it an incredibly loud instrument.  (She made sure before her death
that there would be no question to whom her piano would go, and all I
have to do to stir strong memories is to bang out one of those old
favorites on it.)
