It has never been proved by any credible source that William P. Evans was
the son of a John Evans nor that the said John Evans was the son of the
George Evans that he is usually attributed to. That has been a roadblock
of sorts for me in tracing my line fron William Parsons Evans back.
Relatives of mine in the past have claimed these two men but none have
offered any proof other than to quote an aunt, Cludie Evans, who died in
1963 but was considered the Evans Family historian. She said that
William's father was John Evans born 1765 and died 1820. Other Evans kin
have claimed that John did not die until 1860 at age 106. I have found
two different John Evans who could be what she based her statment on but
neither completely match what she said about John. A John Jehu Evans born
unk but died in 1820 in Morgan County, Ga. His wife was named Elizabeth
last name unk. However his will listed all his kids and the William that
was his son is William George Evans not William P. The other John Evans
was born 1758 and died in 1860 and is buried in Gwinnett County. His wife
was named Elizabeth Burton and his son William was William Passley Evans
not William Parsons. However one of his other sons was a Turner Evans
whom Cludie claimed was William Parson's brother and in Turner's bible it
is recorded that his father died on November 18, 1860.
John Evans was born in 1765 and when very young, he enlisted in the NC
Militia and served as a private. After the close of the war he received
a land grant for his service. In 1795 he married Elizabeth McMurry.
I am glad to see someone else who has posted the truth about William P.
Evans possible parents. I have been saying exactly what you stated in
your posting on Rootsweb about those earlier Evans researchers who made
the questionable claims about his parents. Are you aware that Cludie
Evans in 1940 submitted information on her and her husbands family to be
published in the Compendium of American Genealogy. She went into great
detail on her husband's side of the family but could only provide the
name John Evans as the father of William P. and nothing else. Not until
1963 when Marvin Evans published his book on the Evans Family did she
come forth with the birthdate of 1765, the marriage date of 1795 , the
wife's name of Elizabeth McMurray and the deathdate of 1821. Where she
got that information is not known and noone since has found anything to
back that up. <DDSTRICKLEN@@aol.com on 11 Mar 2003.
Ron, Here is the second installment:
Julia S. Cludie Evans Goodrich was granddaughter of William
Parsons and Elizabeth McEwen Evans. In 1942 she made an entry about our
family in The Compendium of American Genealogy, Volume VII, 1942.
(Yesterday, I was in error when I told you that she published in 1939.)
All she said about William Parsons Evans ancestors is that his father was
named John. Elizabeth McMurray's name is not given. Cludie mentioned DAR
membership in this publication. In later times a researcher found out
that her membership is through her maternal line.
Between 1942 and 1955 Cludie, apparently did additional research
and contributed it to Marvin Ditzlar Evans. I told you about the
historical information in that book earlier this morning. In my opinion
Cludie and Marvin erred in asserting that William Parson's parents were
John Evans and Elizabeth McMurray. This couple was actually John Juhu
Evans and Elizabeth McMurray. They had a son named William George Evans,
b. 10/3/1804 in GA and d. 6/6/1876 in TX. I have a copy of John Jehu's
will, and George- not William Parsons- among other children are listed as
beneficiaries. I have corresponded with researchers in the John Jehu
Evans line, and they appear to have their act together.
In 1963 (not 1964 as I told you yesterday) Noel Evans wrote his
paper, "Evans Family Record, Compiled by Noel Evans, 1963." Noel went
along with the
