William Cowart was born 6 August 1809 in South Carolina. His family
came from Belfast, Ireland. Nancy Galaspy was born 12 December 1814 and
her family was from Liverpool, England. William and Nancy married 13
January 1835. They were in Coosa County as early as 1850 in the vicinity
of Shady Grove but moved to Arkansas prior to the Civil War. Their son,
Wiley was the only one of the family that remained in Coosa County. The
others moved to Arkansas.
William and Nancy has the following children, Wiley b. 15 December
1836, m. Elizabeth A. Lee 27 Dec 1859; Sara Jane b. 6 September 1839, m.
James F. Ham 31 Jan. 1861 in Coosa County; John D. b. 16 September 1841,
married Annie?; Mary Ann b. 11 Dec 1843 m. Seaborn Yarbrough, Martha
Adeline b. 9 Nov 1845 m. Russell Yarbrough Coosa County, Nancy Linton b.
11 January 1848 burned to death, Davy Galaspy b. 13 December 1850 m.
Fanny Demetries, Francis Virginia, b. 1 May 1853 d. 14 October 1855,
William Joseph b. 4 November 1856 m. 1st Amanda America Ward, 2nd Mollie
Hanson,. William Cowart died 1 August 1876 and is buried in Columbia or
Union County, Arkansas. Nancy died 14 August 1899 and is buried in Dalem
Cemtery in Pike County, Arkansas. William and Nancy owned land in Coosa
County, selling some as late as 17 August 1868 to Wiley Cowart.
Descendants of William and Nancy still reside in Pike County,
Arkansas and attended a cowart Reunion in Alabama in 1984. Ther are quite
a few descendants of Wiley Cowart who are currently in Coosa County and
