William's father was Alan La Zouche Earl of Brittany and his mother was Alice De Belmeis. His paternal grandparents were Geoffrey La Zouche Count De PorhoÎt and Hawise Fergant; his maternal grandparents were Philip de Belmeis Lord Ashby Tong and Maud Le Meschimes. He had a brother named Roger.
