Hugh was born in 1186 in of Wigmore, Herefordshire, England.  Hugh's father was Roger de Mortimer Baron Wigmore and his mother was Millicent de Ferrers. He had two brothers and a sister, named Ralph de Mortimer, Roger and Joane.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had two half-brothers named Robert and Philip.  He died at the age of 41 in November 1227.
