Gruffudd was born about 1071 in Llandilo (Dynevor Castle), Carmarthenshire, Wales.  Gruffudd's father was Rhys King of Deheubarth/King of Wales/ap Tewdwr and his mother was Gwladus Gwladys Gwladys. He had two sisters named Nesta and Margred.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother named Geraldus.  He died after 1137.
