Ailwin was the Vice-Comes, or Sheriff of Warwickshire. Alwyne is styled "Alvinus Vicecomes" in the General Survey, and "The reason thereof," observes Dugdale, "I conceive to be either because he did exercise the power and authority of the Earls of Mercia in Warwick as his ancestors had done, for which respect he and they have been reputed earls, as I have ranckt them in that degree, or else that he hath the custody of the county to the king's immediate use."
